Sir Ronald speaks at his inauguration

Respected diplomat, academic, and former broadcast journalist Sir Ronald Sanders was officially installed on Friday as the 11th Chancellor of the University of Guyana.

President Dr Irfaan Ali, speaking at the installation ceremony, said the appointment comes at a time when Guyana’s economy is undergoing significant transformation, requiring an educated and highly skilled society capable of advancing the country across all industries and disciplines. He highlighted Sir Ronald’s extensive experience in academia, research, international diplomacy, and regional development as key assets for the university.

“I believe that at this time in our history and as the world undergoes immense change, it is appropriate that we have a bridge to help us navigate the changing environment in which education must be pursued and delivered,” President Ali said, adding that knowledge and research are essential to transforming economies and improving lives.

Sir Ronald Sanders, accepting the office, emphasised his commitment to sustaining the university’s integrity, relevance, and vision amid rapid national change. “Guyana today stands on the hinge of history; economic possibilities have widened, national expectations have risen, global competition has sharpened. The country’s future is not secured by resources alone, but by what its people know, how quickly they learn and how effectively they apply knowledge,” he said.

The Chancellor stressed that a skilled, adaptive, and critically minded population is the nation’s most sustainable advantage, and that the University of Guyana plays a pivotal role in ensuring broad-based national development.
