A Recycling and Composting Centre at the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill in Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was officially launched by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development (MLGRD) on Tuesday.
The launch marks a key step in strengthening sustainable solid waste management nationwide and coincided with the start of a series of composting training sessions running through Thursday, aimed at building national and local capacity in organic waste diversion. The programme is supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and implemented by the Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP) in collaboration with ImplementaSur.
Participants took part in practical workshops at the landfill, creating compost piles from organic and market waste under the guidance of composting consultant Matthew Cotton. Training covered feedstock evaluation, pile construction, monitoring, and organics collection systems.
The initiative brought together government agencies, local authorities, educational institutions, and private-sector stakeholders. It is intended to serve as a model for similar programmes across Guyana, supporting the country’s environmental and climate objectives.
