First batch of Arcadia informal settlers receives house lots under relocation programme
One of the house lot recipients receives an instrument of ownership from Minister Croal

The first group of informal settlers from Arcadia (Mocha), East Bank Demerara, have received official house lot allocations, allowing them to transition from illegal squatting to formal housing, the Housing Ministry said on Thursday.
Housing Minister Collin D. Croal and CH&PA Director Gladwin Charles were present to assist with the house lot selection and to meet the beneficiaries.

The relocation affects residents from Fields 1–3, which were recently regularised following land acquisition from the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), as well as 50 settlers from Fields 4–6, which is not scheduled for regularisation. Construction of a new access road and provision of essential utilities are underway in the regularised section.

Seventeen beneficiaries were invited to begin the allocation process, with Minister Croal praising their cooperation amid political pressures. “This government is interested in ensuring that all citizens have access to proper housing… and a secured environment for the next generation,” he said.

Residents expressed gratitude for the move, citing improved living standards. “I’m very thankful for what the government has done,” said Leron Griffith. Shemele Moore added: “I’m grateful that I can actually own a piece of house lot for myself and my children.”
