Death aboard vessel: Crew members die from suspected fume exposure

The four crew members of the MV Captain Virat, who were found dead onboard the vessel, reportedly died from suspected noxious fumes while conducting an inspection in the engine room of a cargo vessel docked at a wharf in Cummingsburg, Georgetown.

According to initial reports, Brandon Deonarine, 18, a seaman from Support, East Bank Demerara, and Nerwaine Persaud, 57, a boat captain from Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, entered the engine room first and collapsed. Dominic Alexis, 33, a seaman from De Kendren, West Coast Demerara, and Getindra Sanchara, 25, an engineer from Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, subsequently entered in attempts to assist but also collapsed.

Emergency Medical Technicians and the Guyana Fire Service responded to the scene and removed the men from the vessel. They were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said the scene was processed, but the engine room had not yet been examined pending safety clearance. No marks of violence were observed on the exposed parts of the bodies, and foul play is not suspected at this time.
