Thirty-two scholars under the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) have completed doctoral studies through Texila American University (TAU), marking the first cohort of GOAL recipients to earn PhDs.
Of the group, 27 graduated with doctorates in management and five in public health. The cohort comprises 18 men and 14 women. The three-year programmes were delivered fully online and were tuition-free.
GOAL Director Jacob Opadeyi said the programme’s flexible online format allowed working professionals to pursue and complete advanced academic studies. He noted that the graduates’ research and expertise could contribute to development within their workplaces, communities and the country at large.
Since its launch in 2021, GOAL has awarded more than 54,000 online scholarships to Guyanese, ranging from vocational certificates to doctoral programmes.
Doctoral enrolment under the initiative continues to expand, with 615 GOAL scholars currently pursuing PhDs through partner universities in Malawi, Zambia and India. At JAIN ARKA University in India, 193 scholars are enrolled in doctoral programmes, while UNICAF Malawi and UNICAF Zambia account for 416 and six doctoral candidates respectively.
GOAL congratulated the 32 graduates on earning their doctoral qualifications and acknowledged their commitment to applying their skills and knowledge to Guyana’s ongoing development.
