Persaud takes early command of National Top League
Patanjilee Persaud in action

Fresh off his resounding victory at the Suriname Open, Patanjilee Persaud carried his winning form onto home soil, emerging as the early leader after the opening round of the newly launched National Top League at the Lusignan Golf Course on Sunday.
Leading the field in emphatic fashion was Persaud, who delivered an outstanding all-round performance, recording both Low Gross and Low Net scores of 83 and 67 respectively. He set the pace early with a solid 37 on the front nine, displaying the confidence and consistency that brought him international success just weeks ago.

However, his round took an unexpected turn on the 10th hole when his driver cracked mid-swing, immediately putting an end to its use for the remainder of the round. Forced to rely on the remaining clubs in his bag, Persaud showed resilience and composure under pressure, grinding through the back nine to hold on to the top spot on the leaderboard.
In addition to these achievements, Persaud also claimed victory on the Front Nine and secured the Overall round win, accumulating a commanding total of 10 points from the opening round. “This pole position is a position I enjoy,” Persaud said afterward. “I’ve worked very hard to get here, and starting ahead of the camp is always a good place to be. The challenge now is to endure and continue this level of performance over the next eight weeks.”

Finishing in second place was Videsh Persaud, who posted a strong Net score of 74 and captured the Back Nine honours, earning him a combined total of seven points for the day. Third place was claimed by Mike Mangal, who earned three valuable points, while Brian Hackett followed closely in fourth place, collecting two points for his efforts. Rounding out the top five was Spencer Hutchins, who secured fifth place and one point, ensuring that every competitor in the top tier left the course with points added to their league total.
As the National Top League continues, fans can expect gripping battles, unpredictable conditions, and high-level golf as Guyana’s finest players vie for supremacy at Lusignan. Importantly, the league remains open to new members, and interested golfers are encouraged to join at any stage of the competition. New participants can enter the league, compete weekly, and accumulate points towards the overall standings, making the NTFGL an inclusive and dynamic tournament structure.
