The driver of a motor lorry is in police custody as investigations continue into a fatal road accident on the Linden–Mabura Trail that left three people dead on Thursday night.
The accident occurred at about 21:30 hrs on January 22, 2026, on the newly asphalted roadway and involved a motor lorry and a hire car.
Police said the driver of the motor lorry, a 36-year-old man from Craig, East Bank Demerara, is assisting with the investigation.
The deceased have been identified as the driver of the hire car, Marcus Berley, 32, of One Mile, Wismar, and passengers Andrew Irvin, 52, also of One Mile, Wismar, and Maureen Patricia Woodley, 81, a Jamaican-born naturalised U.S. citizen.
Preliminary investigations indicated that hire car HD 6751 was travelling west along the southern side of the road at an allegedly high rate of speed when it collided with the right rear of motor lorry GJJ 4000 and trailer TSS 4613, which was parked on the southern side of the roadway facing west.
As a result of the collision, the driver and two occupants of the hire car sustained critical injuries and were transported to the Linden Hospital Complex in an unconscious state, where they were examined and pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
