Classes at Charity Secondary School in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) were disrupted on Thursday after a senior teacher was assaulted by a Grade Nine student during school hours.
The incident occurred shortly after 09:30h on 22 January, while the teacher, Alicia Moore, was conducting routine supervision and intervened to correct a student’s inappropriate behaviour. The situation reportedly escalated when the student became violent, attacking the teacher and causing visible injuries to her face and arms. She was also reportedly bitten during the altercation.
Ms Moore was taken to hospital for medical attention. After receiving treatment and being discharged, she returned to the school, where meetings were held with senior education officials, regional authorities, and representatives of the teachers’ union.
In the aftermath of the incident, teachers temporarily withdrew from classroom duties, citing ongoing concerns about student indiscipline and aggression, and highlighting the need for greater protection for educators.
The Department of Education has since engaged the student’s parent as part of the response. The student has been suspended, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities have indicated that a transfer to another school is being considered.
School administrators acknowledged that the incident reflects broader behavioural challenges at the institution, which serves approximately 750 students. Concerns about bullying and misconduct had been raised previously, despite a recent anti-bullying initiative conducted earlier this month.
Education officials have condemned the assault as unacceptable and have pledged full support for the injured teacher. They are also reviewing additional measures to enhance the safety and well-being of both teachers and students as the investigation continues.
