The Association of People of African Descent (APAD) has urged Opposition Members of Parliament to exercise sound judgement when selecting the next Leader of the Opposition, expressing concern over the possible elevation of Azruddin Mohamed to the post.
In a statement issued by its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ruackel Easton, ahead of Monday’s meeting of Opposition MPs to elect a Leader for Guyana’s 13th Parliament, APAD stressed that the decision carries serious constitutional and national implications and should not be treated as an internal party matter.
The organisation noted that it is a matter of public record that Mohamed is facing criminal charges in the United States, including allegations related to gold smuggling and tax evasion.
APAD emphasised that, under Guyana’s Constitution, the Leader of the Opposition holds a uniquely powerful role, with responsibility for key constitutional appointments, democratic oversight, and representing the State in matters requiring credibility and public confidence.
“This is not a ceremonial position, nor one that can be insulated from scrutiny by political convenience,” the statement said.
The organisation also pointed to Guyana’s current stage of development, noting that the country is advancing towards economic growth, institutional strengthening and increased international engagement after decades of constraint.
According to APAD, the election of an Opposition Leader whose standing raises public concern could undermine confidence in Parliament, weaken democratic checks and balances, and erode Guyana’s credibility at a critical time.
APAD called on Opposition MPs to place the national interest above political considerations, warning that decisions taken now will have lasting consequences for governance, public trust and Guyana’s development trajectory.
