Police arrested six people after discovering a handgun and ammunition during an overnight operation in Linden, authorities said on Tuesday, as investigations continue into a video circulating on social media involving wanted man Jamal Bourne, also known as “Skinny”.
The operation was carried out between 1900 and 2330 local time on Jan. 20 at Three Miles, Wisroc, by ranks from Regional Divisions Three and Ten, acting on information received, the Guyana Police Force said.
Police searched a wooden structure hidden in dense vegetation and found a black and silver Taurus pistol concealed under a mattress. The weapon’s serial number had been filed off, and six live .32 calibre rounds of ammunition were also recovered, police said.
During further searches of the surrounding area, officers observed a heap of burnt material close to the structure. Forensic experts have since been deployed to examine the site and determine the origin and nature of the material, according to police.
The six suspects, who were present at the location at the time of the search, were arrested and taken to the Mackenzie Police Station, where the firearm and ammunition were lodged as evidence.
Those in custody include two 18-year-olds — a male farmer from Yarrowkabra, along the Soesdyke–Linden Highway, and a female from Bell West Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara — as well as a 20-year-old male labourer from North Ruimveldt, a 20-year-old male from Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, a 21-year-old female from Grove, East Bank Demerara, and a 26-year-old male farmer from Georgetown.
Police said all six remain in custody as investigations continue and that further details will be released as they become available.
