The Ministry of Public Works is assessing alternative locations for a proposed connector road linking Providence on the East Bank of Demerara to Ogle on the East Coast, a project aimed at easing traffic congestion and reducing travel time.
The roadway is expected to allow commuters exiting the Ogle–Eccles Highway to connect directly to the roundabout at Heroes Highway and the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, improving traffic flow between the two corridors.
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill said on Sunday that a revised alignment is being considered after the original route was found to conflict with expansion plans by the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).
Under the initial agreement, the road would have passed close to a GPL substation and other infrastructure.
“We had an agreement, GPL has since said that they would like to do expansion and it’s not too safe for us to be in such close proximity. So we are here to see how we can get that problem solved,” Edghill said.
He explained that the current proposal would shift the route about 200 metres from the original site to bypass GPL facilities and better align with the Demerara Bridge. Consultants and contractors, he added, will reassess the revised alignment to determine costs and feasibility.
According to Edghill, the connector road will span approximately 4.7 kilometres, limit disruption to nearby communities and enhance accessibility.
“What this means is when you come over the bridge, you come straight around the roundabout and you will have a connector similar to Haags Bosch, similar to Aubrey Barker that connects you all the way to this new four lane, Ogle/Eccles interlink as it is called.”
