No unusual movements at borders but Guyana remains on high alert
Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips

Local security forces have not detected any unusual movements along Guyana’s borders, but the country remains on high alert following a U.S. operation in Venezuela earlier this month.
Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips said the Guyana Defence Force and other security agencies have been placed in a heightened state of readiness since January 3, when U.S. forces arrested and detained Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

“The Guyana Defence Force has already deployed along all our borders; Suriname, Brazil and our border with Venezuela. As a result of what transpired on January 3, immediately we went into a more heightened state of readiness,” Phillips said during an interview on the Starting Point podcast.
Phillips noted that while activities along the borders may appear normal, authorities are maintaining close surveillance and will not assume that the situation has stabilised.
“We will not fall into any false sense of security into believing that everything is back to normal. We continue to observe and focus on ensuring that any instability or untoward acts on the other side of the border do not spill over,” he said.
The prime minister added that security forces, residents, and regional bodies in border communities have been engaged to ensure awareness of the situation, stressing that the government remains resolute in protecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
