Jamaica praises GDF for Hurricane Melissa recovery work

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness praised the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Friday for its professionalism and contribution to post-disaster recovery following Hurricane Melissa, describing the deployment as a strong example of Caribbean solidarity.

Speaking to the GDF contingent at White House in Westmoreland, Holness commended the troops for their discipline, dedication and service, noting that their efforts were making a meaningful difference for families and communities affected by the storm.

The Guyanese contingent has been involved in rebuilding damaged homes, completing 62 roofs to date, with a further seven under construction. The work has helped restore safety and stability to dozens of households.

Holness highlighted the troops’ professionalism and work ethic, saying their conduct reflected high standards of regional military cooperation and humanitarian response. He also praised the compassion shown to residents alongside their technical expertise.

The deployment underscores the GDF’s expanding role beyond traditional defence, encompassing humanitarian aid and regional cooperation. Officials say the Jamaica mission illustrates the force’s adaptability as Caribbean militaries take on broader disaster-response responsibilities.
