Nearly 200 residential house lots were allocated during a Region Two housing outreach on Friday, marking a major step in addressing housing demand along the Essequibo Coast.
The outreach, held in Anna Regina, provided residents with direct engagement with housing officials, resolving long-standing issues related to applications, allocations, and infrastructure. Beneficiaries expressed relief as many cases pending for years were clarified and settled.
A key focus of the event was an update on drainage infrastructure for the Buxton/St. Joseph Housing Schemes. Housing Minister Collin Croal said the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) had completed a comprehensive plan to improve water management and reduce flooding risks.
Phase One, valued at $44,212,403, involves the construction of approximately 0.7 kilometres of drainage channels and a new drainage structure to discharge excess water into the Pomeroon River on a controlled, tidal basis. The contract has been awarded to Triple A General Contracting Services, with works set to begin within two weeks.
Phase Two will further strengthen the system with an 80-cusec mobile pump to manage heavy rainfall. The contract has been signed, and installation is expected by February 2026.
The outreach was in keeping with the government’s ongoing commitment to reduce housing backlogs, expand access to residential land, and ensure supporting infrastructure is effectively planned and implemented.
