Nearly 90 pounds of red tilapia were harvested on Wednesday, marking the first yield for 2026 from the tilapia hatchery at the Timehri Prison.
The hatchery, operated by staff and female inmates, is aimed at providing an additional food source for the prison’s general population while equipping inmates with practical skills.
Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot said the initiative reflects the Guyana Prison Service’s commitment to inmate rehabilitation through skills development.
The project also supports the Prison Service’s broader goal of achieving self-sufficiency. The red tilapia initiative forms part of a wider agricultural programme within the prison system, which includes vegetable cultivation and poultry farming.
