Plans for a second phase of development are underway at the Rosignol Fisheries Cooperative Wharf in Region Five, aimed at transforming the facility into a more attractive and functional space for fisherfolk and visitors.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced the plans during a visit to the completed facility, where he met and engaged with local fisherfolk to assess the impact of recent upgrades and outline further development.
“We now have to work on a second phase of creating a conducive environment here in the compound itself that would encourage people to see this as not only a place to sell fish, but an experience when you come here,” the Head of State said.
The visit followed the completion of several upgrades that addressed priority needs identified just months earlier when the President and his team first engaged fisherfolk in the area.
“The priority was to have a shed and floor area for the maintenance of their seine and other equipment, the construction of a secure shed for engines and other important assets, the development of the wharf itself, and a safe gas storage facility,” the President said.
He expressed satisfaction that all commitments made during that earlier visit were fulfilled within months, significantly improving working conditions for those who depend on the fisheries sector for their livelihoods.
“I’m very pleased that everything we committed to has been completed,” he said, while commending the Ministry of Agriculture for delivering on its promises.
The President also highlighted improvements to the access road and driveway within the compound, noting that the area was previously muddy and difficult to navigate.
“This entire driveway that you’re walking on now was all mud, so there’s no one here who can say they are neglected—not under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government,” he said.
The completed upgrades at the Rosignol Fisheries Cooperative Wharf are expected to enhance efficiency, safety and livelihoods for fisherfolk, as preparations move ahead for the next phase of development.
