A family left homeless by a fire in Arpiaco, Upper Pomeroon, on Sunday has received much-needed relief from officials in Region Two.
The blaze destroyed their wooden home, displacing four family members: an 88-year-old man, a 25-year-old mother, and her two children, aged four and two. At the time of the incident, the mother and her youngest child were hospitalised, while the elderly man was at home with his grandson.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
A coordinated response involved Region Two officials, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, the Guyana Fire Service, the Charity Neighbourhood Democratic Council, and the Civil Defence Commission. Aid was provided, while the Regional Democratic Council, under the Deputy Regional Executive Officer, is overseeing ongoing support. The Civil Defence Commission also delivered emergency assistance to meet the family’s urgent needs.
The family is currently being housed by a neighbouring resident as plans are made for longer-term support, including rebuilding their home. They expressed gratitude to all agencies for their swift and compassionate response.
