A wooden, single-storey house was completely destroyed by a fire of unknown origin on Sunday at Angoys Avenue, New Amsterdam.
The house was occupied by Rasheed Singh and belonged to his mother. According to Singh, he was visiting his sister a short distance away when the blaze started.
“I was away for two to three hours,” Singh recounted. “I suddenly heard someone shouting, ‘Your house is on fire!’ The person told me to look in front, and when I came out and saw it, the house was already ablaze,” he added.
Singh said the flames spread rapidly, leaving him helpless as he watched his home burn.
“I couldn’t even throw a bucket of water,” he said.
He added that, to his knowledge, there were no electrical faults or appliances left on that could have caused the fire.
“I can’t say what caused it,” Singh explained. “There was no current, no light, no stove, nothing.”
The fire reduced the structure to ruins, and investigations are expected to determine the cause of the blaze.
