Western Tigers’ victory linked to wider investment in sport

One of the grounds that benefitted under the Community Ground Development Programme

The success of Western Tigers Football Club in the recently concluded Super 16 Year-End Cup is a direct result of the government’s nationwide Community Ground Development Programme, according to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.

“In the wake of the victory, recognition has been directed towards the Ministry’s long-term approach to sports development, which prioritises grassroots clubs and youth engagement as key pillars of national sporting growth. The outcome has been cited as clear evidence that strategic investment in infrastructure and development programmes can yield measurable results on the field,” the ministry said in a statement.

Further, the ministry highlighted that the success of Western Tigers confirms its continued contribution to the development of sport in Guyana.
“The ministry has welcomed the success as validation of its vision to strengthen community sport across Guyana, reaffirming its commitment to expanding developmental initiatives and improving facilities nationwide. As celebrations continue, Western Tigers’ victory stands not only as a sporting achievement, but also as a demonstration of how deliberate policy and community-focused investment can shape competitive excellence,” the ministry noted.
Western Tigers defeated Slingerz FC 1–0 on New Year’s evening to claim the Super 16 title.
