Police warn against firecracker use during New Year celebrations

The Guyana Police Force has warned against the sale and use of firecrackers and other explosive devices during the New Year celebrations, citing the risk of serious injuries to users and bystanders.
The Force said past incidents have seen both children and adults sustain grievous injuries from firecrackers and urged the public to exercise caution and act responsibly.

Authorities warned that individuals or businesses selling or in possession of explosives without a permit could face prosecution under Section 13(1) and (2) of the Explosives Act, which prohibits the illegal sale and use of explosives without ministerial approval.

Regional commanders have been instructed to maintain law enforcement measures, including seizures, raids, and searches based on intelligence, to prevent the distribution of these devices.
The police reiterated that violations of the law will be met with the full force of legal action.
