Guyana will end its two-year tenure as an elected member of the United Nations Security Council at midnight on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, marking the conclusion of a period guided by the theme “Partnering for Peace and Prosperity.”

Guyana’s term, which began on January 1, 2024, coincided with major global crises, including the war in Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza, violence in Sudan, and the Taliban’s intensified repression of women in Afghanistan. The Security Council also faced challenges in the Sahel, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and other conflict-affected regions, while navigating issues such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, humanitarian safety, and peacekeeping reform amid geopolitical divisions among permanent members.

During its tenure, Guyana presided over the Security Council twice, in February 2024 and June 2025, hosting signature events on the impact of climate change and food insecurity on international peace, and on the links between poverty, underdevelopment, and conflict. The country also advanced agendas on Women, Peace and Security, Climate Peace and Security, Youth, Peace and Security, and Children and Armed Conflict, and co-authored a landmark resolution on Youth, Peace and Security with Sierra Leone, unanimously adopted in December 2025.

Guyana engaged actively with regional and international partners, including the African A3+ members, the E10 group of elected members, CARICOM, and the Non-Aligned Movement. It chaired or vice-chaired several Security Council subsidiary bodies, led high-level field missions to Colombia and Chad, and facilitated civil society briefings to strengthen Council deliberations.
Over the two years, the Security Council adopted 90 resolutions, 15 Presidential Statements, 77 Press Statements, and 21 Notes by the President, all with Guyana’s active involvement. The country was widely regarded as a principled and constructive actor, reinforcing multilateralism and adherence to the United Nations Charter.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs credited the success of Guyana’s tenure to the work of its UN Mission, officials at home, and international partners, noting that the period enhanced the country’s global standing.
As its term concludes, Guyana reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, security, and prosperity worldwide.
