Nineteen farmers have received dairy stock under the first phase of a government initiative to expand Guyana’s dairy industry.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said the administration is focusing on integrated livestock production systems to boost output and improve sustainability.
Mustapha said the government has advanced several aspects of the livestock sector over the past five years and cautioned farmers against adopting a “tunnel vision” approach, urging them instead to embrace integrated systems across production.
He said more than $110 million had been spent to facilitate about 300 embryo transplants aimed at increasing dairy production and improving livestock genetics nationwide.
The minister also said Demerara Distillers Limited is partnering with an international company to establish a modern dairy processing plant at Moblissa, adding that the facility is about 90 per cent complete.
“When we give you these animals and you continue breeding through the embryo transplant programme, you will be able to produce additional heifers for dairy production,” Mustapha said.
Farmers also received soilage to support improved feeding systems and sustainable production.
