Ten persons living with disabilities received cheques of $500,000 each to start or expand their small businesses, marking a $5 million initiative aimed at strengthening financial independence, officials said.

The support was delivered through a collaboration between the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, via its Support Services for Persons Living with Disabilities Unit, and the Small Business Bureau (SSB).

The ministry said the initiative aligns with its broader efforts to promote economic empowerment, self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable groups.

During the cheque presentation, Human Services and Social Security Minister Vindhya Persaud encouraged recipients to remain focused and committed, stressing that access to practical resources is essential to meaningful empowerment.

Recipients said the grants offered an opportunity to grow their businesses and pursue long-term stability during the Christmas season.
