
An investigation has been launched into an alleged robbery and murder that claimed the life of a 61-year-old businessman and left another injured early Monday morning at Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice.
The deceased has been identified as Chen Yongping, a businessman of Chinese descent. Injured during the incident was Chen Dongrong, 32, who resides at the same address.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the two men left their home around 03:00 hrs to conduct business at the Port Mourant Market in Corentyne, Berbice.
At approximately 05:00 hrs, upon returning home to Lot 21, Cumberland Village, they were reportedly confronted by two unidentified males armed with knives.
Police stated that the assailants robbed the victims of several items. Chen Yongping lost an iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at $322,000 and an undetermined sum of cash. Chen Dongrong reportedly lost $150,000 in cash and an iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at $342,000.
During the attack, both men sustained injuries, including stab wounds. They were taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for treatment. Chen Yongping later succumbed to his injuries, while Chen Dongrong, who suffered a fractured skull, has since been treated and discharged.
The body of Chen Yongping is currently at a funeral parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.
