Local authorities along the East Coast Demerara were urged on Thursday to improve administrative systems and deliver more responsive public services during a meeting led by Local Government Minister Priya Manickchand.

The session brought together chairs, vice chairs, councillors, overseers and other officials to discuss challenges including ageing infrastructure, weak drainage and irrigation systems, and waste management. Strengthening financial management, revenue collection and record-keeping to ensure more transparent spending was also highlighted.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo made an unannounced appearance, joining discussions with NDC representatives and residents. He reiterated his party’s commitment to meeting manifesto promises and emphasised stronger collaboration with communities.

Manickchand said her ministry would continue to support local democratic organs as part of efforts to improve service delivery and advance community development. The meeting forms part of a nationwide series assessing the performance of local bodies and shaping priorities for 2026 and beyond.
