Planned sugar refinery to create 60 jobs

A planned white sugar refinery at the former Wales Sugar Estate is expected to create about 75 jobs during construction and 60 permanent positions once operations begin next year, investors told President Irfaan Ali during a meeting this week.
The 100,000-tonne facility is being developed by local firm Gaico Inc. in partnership with North America–based Sucro, which has built three similar refineries, including the Caribbean Sugar Refinery and Santander Sugar in Belize. The project is expected to strengthen Guyana’s sugar industry and provide GuySuCo with a reliable additional market.
Investors said the establishment of a local refinery, supported by an existing regional logistics network, will reduce the Caribbean’s dependence on imported refined sugar.
On Tuesday evening, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, oversaw the signing of the private-sector joint-venture agreement between Sucro CEO Jonathan Taylor and Gaico CEO Komal Singh.
Singh said the initiative underscores the value of partnership and reflects the government’s long-term commitment to revitalising the sugar industry.
