Guyana has deployed a contingent of military engineers to Jamaica to support reconstruction efforts following the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) said on Friday.

The team, comprising one officer and 40 other ranks from the GDF’s 4 Engineers Battalion, includes both regular and reserve personnel. Officials said the deployment reflects Guyana’s commitment to regional cooperation and disaster response within the Caribbean.

The engineers will work with Jamaican authorities to repair infrastructure, rebuild affected communities, and assist ongoing humanitarian operations. Several members of the unit have previously participated in regional disaster-relief missions.

Acting Chief of Defence Staff Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts, MSM, told the contingent before departure that their conduct and professionalism would be critical to the mission’s success.

“Expectations are high, but I am confident you will deliver and represent the Commander-in-Chief with pride,” Roberts said. He added that Guyana’s growing role in regional disaster management meant the GDF’s performance remained under close scrutiny.

Roberts noted that the operation marks the first deployment of its kind during the Christmas season but said the ranks reported fully and were prepared to serve. “The GDF is proud to answer the call when our region needs us,” he said.

The GDF extended best wishes to the contingent and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Caribbean partners during emergencies.
