The Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission (CCAC) on Monday warned suppliers to stop displaying “No Refund” signs or refusing refunds and exchanges, saying such practices breach the Consumer Affairs Act as holiday shopping intensifies.
The commission urged consumers to assert their rights and take precautions as spending rises in the lead-up to Christmas. It advised shoppers to research products, read contracts before signing, inspect items before purchase and request written warranties of at least six months.
Consumers were also reminded to demand receipts, which serve as legal proof for returns, refunds or exchanges. Under the law, non-defective goods may be returned within seven days if unused, untampered and in their original packaging. Suppliers may charge up to a 10 per cent restocking fee.
The CCAC said it has received 461 complaints so far this year, valued at $471.3 million, and has resolved $333.9 million worth of cases.
Consumers are encouraged to call the CCAC at 219-4410/3 or WhatsApp at 625-0557 for inquiries. Consumers can easily file complaints online at ccac.gov.gy.
