The completion of the Linden–Lethem Road and the Kurupukari Bridge is set to transform commerce in the Rupununi region, as the government steps up efforts to develop Region Nine.
Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Susan Rodrigues told the opening of the Rupununi Expo that the infrastructure projects will ease travel, reduce transport costs, and improve the movement of fresh produce, livestock and value-added goods between hinterland and coastland markets. Once operational, the corridor is expected to become a major economic zone and attract new investment.
Speaking alongside Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek, Consular General to Brazil Rodger King, and Deputy Mayor of Lethem Indira Singh, Rodrigues urged businesses to prepare for increased commercial activity as the region enters a new phase of expansion. She said while multiple expos have been held across the country this year, the Rupununi event is uniquely positioned to highlight the economic potential of the frontier district.
Rodrigues also announced that the Ministry has, for the first time, secured a seat on the planning committee for the Rupununi Rodeo, a move expected to enhance event organisation, improve the visitor experience, and encourage businesses — particularly in hospitality — to expand accommodation capacity ahead of rising demand.
The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce said Region Nine is no longer a peripheral district but an emerging hub where improved infrastructure, growing tourism, and cross-border commerce intersect. As exhibitors showcase agricultural, craft, and tourism products, the Expo is designed to help businesses prepare for the transformation already underway.
