China ready to help Guyana cultivate dragon fruit, bamboo, and other crops

China has offered technical support to Guyana in cultivating dragon fruit, bamboo, Chinese grass and other fruits and vegetables, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Tuesday.

The offer came during a courtesy call by Bruce Lee, Head of Economic Commercial Consular at the Chinese Embassy in Guyana, on Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha at his Regent Street office. Discussions focused on strengthening economic cooperation, including rice cultivation and other agricultural crops.

Lee also proposed study tours in various agricultural fields for Guyanese students in 2026 to enhance technical expertise.

Mustapha said Guyana could benefit from China’s advanced rice cultivation technologies, particularly in improving salt tolerance and yields. He noted the long-standing bilateral relationship and expressed hope for continued collaboration in the agricultural sector.

The minister was joined by Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dhaneshwar Deonarine.
