When Macaela Cameron returned to full-time work after the birth of her daughter, she was struck by a quiet truth: countless women across Guyana were navigating similar challenges, balancing professional ambitions with family responsibilities, often without recognition. That moment inspired her to create Phenomenal Women, a series now entering its fifth season, dedicated to celebrating the resilience, leadership, and transformative impact of women nationwide.
“This pushed her to create a platform dedicated to honouring women who embody resilience, ambition, and leadership,” Cameron told the Starting Point podcast this week.
The series has grown into a national celebration, highlighting trailblazers across Business and Entrepreneurship, Sports, Health, Arts-Culture-Education, and Public Service. Rather than handpicking honorees, Cameron says the achievements themselves “choose the women,” ensuring recognition is authentic and merit-based.
Over the past four seasons, Phenomenal Women has showcased remarkable journeys. Cameron recalls interviewing entrepreneur Eamon Cummings, who rose from teen motherhood to build a thriving business. “These stories demonstrate courage, sacrifice, and the unwavering determination that fuels national development,” Cameron said.
This year’s season promises deeper storytelling and fresh surprises, with a continued focus on representation and authenticity. Cameron said she hopes the series creates a space where young women can see themselves reflected in the achievements of others.
Speaking about her daughter, Cameron became emotional. She described her mission as helping build a future where “every girl grows up knowing she is capable of greatness.” She urged young women to pursue opportunities fearlessly, embrace leadership, and stay true to themselves.
As Guyana experiences rapid growth, Cameron believes women remain central to the nation’s transformation. Her series, she said, stands as both a tribute to their strength and a reminder that the country’s progress continues to be powered by phenomenal women.
