The sod has been turned for a new airport terminal in Bartica, a project expected to strengthen regional connectivity, expand tourism, and support broader economic diversification in Region Seven.
President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, speaking at the event, described the development as a transformative milestone for the region and part of wider national efforts to improve transport and reduce costs.
He said the initiative reflects “the continuous reinvestment of local wealth back into national development” and praised the BK Group for expanding its investments across Guyana.
“As we turn this sod, we turn a new page for Region Seven,” he said, adding, “Because when we build together, we rise together.”
He noted that Bartica is undergoing rapid change under the government’s development agenda and said the new terminal will be a critical link in opening the region by air, expanding tourism opportunities, and improving services for residents and businesses.
Bartica, long known as a gateway to the hinterland and mining districts, is evolving into a more diversified township.
Key public investments highlighted include upgrades to the stelling and plans for a world-class marina; major spending on housing, roads, drainage, and utilities; a new water treatment plant aimed at expanding access to treated water; the landing of fibre-optic cable and 5G service; the extension of the highway network connecting Bartica to Demerara; and a modern hospital expected to begin construction next year.
“These are the foundations of a future in which Bartica becomes a destination, not just a passageway,” he said.
The terminal is expected to cut travel time and reduce operational expenses for interior operators, while enabling innovations such as drone logistics, medevac services, and the direct export of food products to CARICOM markets.
“In simple terms, when places are easier to reach, they become easier to grow,” he said.
Calling on aviation operators to pass on benefits to the public, he urged a reduction in domestic airfares.
“There is no way the aviation sector cannot, at this time, reduce air transport costs by at least 15 per cent,” he said.
He added that national development efforts are geared towards ensuring balanced progress across all regions.
“When Guyana moves, every region must move with it. This investment is about progress, not politics,” he said. (DPI)
