Berbice family celebrates daughter’s architectural achievement at UG’s 59th Convocation

As the University of Guyana opened the first day of its 59th Convocation, one Berbice family stood beaming with pride as they witnessed a dream years in the making come to fruition. Hailing from Rosehall, Berbice, Angad and Debbie Jysingh celebrated the graduation of their only child, Devina Jysingh, who earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

For the Jysingh family, the moment marked not just an academic milestone, but a reflection of sacrifice, perseverance, and unconditional support.

Her father, Angad, shared the joy of seeing Devina cross the stage.

“It’s a very happy moment for us today. Our daughter is graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, which is very nice. Growing up, I graduated from university in business, and I really thought my daughter would take after me and be in the business stream, but she chose the technical stream, which I’m very proud of. I gave her the opportunity to do what she loved.”*

Her mother, Debbie, echoed the pride and encouragement that guided Devina throughout her studies.

“I always encourage her to do what she wants to; I always support her because I know that she is a creative person. I know she had to be in a field where she could explore her creativity.”

For Devina, the road to graduation was filled with both determination and challenges. Coming from Corentyne meant long commutes and logistical hurdles — especially during semesters when on-campus classes were required.

“It was quite a stressful journey. I’m all the way from the Corentyne, so getting the classes here was a struggle. Though, I didn’t have classes on campus every day as we had online classes as well.”

But today, the weight of the journey has given way to relief, excitement, and shared celebration. Completing her studies is one achievement — sharing the moment with her parents, who stood by her every step of the way, is another.

As UG’s convocation series continues, stories like Devina’s — of resilience, family support, and the pursuit of passion — stand at the heart of the university’s celebration of its Class of 2025.
