The Universal Church has removed one of its pastors following a confrontation on Charlotte Street earlier this week between the clergyman and a driver over a disputed parking spot—a clash that previously prompted City Hall to clear illegal “No Parking” signs from the area.
The Georgetown Mayor and City Council had already taken action in response to the initial incident. Engineers from the City Engineer’s Department were dispatched on Monday after reports surfaced of the standoff outside the Universal Church. When they arrived, officials said they found several encumbrances— including unauthorized “No Parking” signs—placed on the city parapet in front of the building.
All items were removed that same day.
At the time, City Engineer Colvern Venture reminded the public that “no permission is granted for the placement of ‘No Parking’ signs or any other encumbrances on city parapets, roadways, or public spaces,” urging businesses and residents to comply with municipal regulations to ensure safe and accessible public thoroughfares.
However, the latest development emerged today, when the President and a Pastor of the Universal Church in Guyana, Dillipchan Bikharie, issued a video statement addressing the pastor’s behaviour.
In the message, Pastor Bikharie apologized to the public and confirmed that the pastor involved has been removed from his position.
“I am here to sincerely and deeply apologize on behalf of the Universal Church, of the Kingdom of God, on behalf of all the pastors, assistants, members and all those who believed in us,” he said.
He continued, “Due to his misconduct and bad behavior, for this reason, the board of the Universal Church here in Guyana has come to an agreement that this pastor has been disqualified from being a pastor here in Guyana.”
Pastor Bikharie noted that the incident does not reflect the church’s values and that the leadership acted to preserve the integrity of the institution.
