Ministry of Natural Resources Launches GeoPortal as Guyana Observes GIS Day 2025

The Ministry of Natural Resources today issued a statement announcing its observance of GIS Day 2025, joining the global geospatial community in celebrating the contributions of Geographic Information Systems and the professionals who support them.

According to the Ministry, GIS Day recognizes “the individuals whose spatial perspectives help address complex challenges and contribute to a better Ministry, a stronger Guyana, and a more informed world.”

The statement noted that GIS Day is intended to highlight “the people and technologies that have transformed industries through the power of spatial thinking.” It added that the observance acknowledges the innovators who “reshaped the way we understand and navigate our world,” and emphasizes how GIS professionals continue to demonstrate its “power, versatility, and relevance” across many fields.

The theme for GIS Day 2025, “Geo-Generalist Era: Where Spatial Meets Everything,” reflects the expanding role of geospatial awareness as more industries and citizens adopt spatial tools and thinking.

The Ministry also reported that, in keeping with President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s National Digitization Programme, Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Vickram Bharrat, tasked the Ministry’s GIS team with developing a geospatial platform to support the work of the Ministry and its agencies.

In its statement, the Ministry announced the launch of its new GeoPortal. The platform will provide access to downloadable spatial datasets, documentation, dashboards, geostories, and maps for professional use. According to the Ministry, the GeoPortal represents “a key step in bringing spatial thinking into everyday decision-making and empowering all individuals through geographic information.”
