The Rupununi Rancher’s Rodeo will participate in this year’s GuyExpo for the first time, giving city residents and visitors a preview of the cultural and tourism experience set for April 3–4, 2026, in Lethem.
The annual hinterland event, held in Region Nine, celebrates Guyana’s rich ranching heritage and showcases the resilience and traditions of Indigenous communities. The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce launched the 2026 edition in the Georgetown Botanical Gardens on Wednesday, highlighting the rodeo as one of Guyana’s most unique cultural and sporting events.
Tourism, Industry and Commerce Minister Susan Rodrigues said the GuyExpo participation will allow residents to interact with committee members and gain a better appreciation of the Rupununi tourism product. “This gives our city residents a little taste of what’s to come when rodeo takes place in Lethem. It is an opportunity to engage, to experience and to hopefully inspire more Guyanese to take that drive down to Region Nine,” she said.
Rodrigues also highlighted the impact of improved infrastructure, including the Linden-to-Lethem road, on accessibility and economic opportunities. “We have appealed to different operators in the aviation sector, and if the response is not positive, then the government will not be waiting for private operators to make it affordable. That’s why we’re investing in the infrastructure. So, we can move people very easily and open economic opportunities for all of our people,” she emphasised.
She commended the Rupununi Livestock Producers Association (RLPA) for strengthening the rural economy through initiatives that foster cultural preservation and economic growth. Rodrigues also described the rodeo as a culturally immersive experience that captures traditions, resilience, and rich storytelling uniting communities.
The Rupununi Rancher’s Rodeo, themed “Wild & Bold, Rupununi Stories Unfold,” is expected to draw thousands of spectators and participants, underscoring the government’s commitment to sustainable tourism that celebrates Guyanese heritage and resilience.
