Omari Glasgow and Nicolette Fernandes captured the nation’s highest sporting honours, claiming the Senior Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards for 2024 at the National Sports Commission’s prestigious awards ceremony on Saturday evening at the New Pegasus.
The black-tie celebration brought together the pinnacle of Guyana’s sporting elite in an evening defined by grace and distinction.
Glasgow earned the male athlete accolade for his outstanding football achievements, while Fernandes claimed the corresponding female honour for her exceptional contributions to squash. The two elite athletes exemplify the caliber of excellence that continues to elevate Guyana’s international sporting reputation.
Guyana’s first female bodybuilding world champion, Rosanna Fung, received a special commendation recognizing her extraordinary world title triumph, positioning her as the frontrunner for the 2025 Female Athlete of the Year award.
Malachi Austin won the Junior Sportsman of the Year award, while Tianna Springer was named Junior Sportswoman of the Year.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., and Minister within the Ministry, Steven Jacobs, both delivered remarks celebrating Guyana’s remarkable sporting transformation and growth. They attributed the nation’s international success to the expansion of sporting infrastructure and the world-class caliber of its athletes.
