Ten cancer survivors were recently treated to a transformative nature trip to Kaieteur Falls, on the heels of the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The expedition, which took place on Sunday, brought together the survivors for an uplifting journey of reflection, resilience, and renewal amid the majestic landscape of one of the world’s most powerful waterfalls.
Now in its third year, the collaboration between Recover Guyana and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) continues to merge eco-tourism with healing, offering participants the chance to reconnect with nature while celebrating survivorship.

Supported by the GTA’s adventure tours, this initiative forms part of Recover Guyana’s broader green and wellness mandate to promote holistic healing through sustainable experiences.
The group, accompanied by Recover Guyana volunteers, embraced a day filled with mindfulness, gratitude, and emotional rejuvenation.
As the sound of the thundering falls surrounded them, survivors shared stories of triumph and courage, finding inspiration in both nature and one another. Many described the experience as profoundly healing and life-affirming.
They also shared heartfelt reflections on the trip’s impact. Survivor Sremala Churaman described the tour as “a celebration of life,” noting how comforting it felt to be among others who understood the journey of battling cancer.
Meanwhile, thirteen-year survivor Trudy Cummings said visiting the Kaieteur Falls was “a dream come true,” while Hermanetta Andrews noted that it made her feel like anything is possible.
Dr. Dave Lalltoo, President and Founder of Recover Guyana, expressed appreciation to the GTA for its continued partnership.
“This journey to Kaieteur Falls was far more than a visit to a national treasure,” he said. “It was a deeply human experience of strength, survival, and connection. Recover Guyana remains steadfast in creating spaces where healing, hope, and nature come together to empower all Guyanese,” he said.
The expedition followed a series of impactful Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiatives, including the Annual World Food Day Health Outreach, where community members benefited from free health checks, cancer education, and wellness activities. Recover Guyana also distributed fresh green baskets and participated in nationwide awareness walks and tree-wrapping events.
