Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has vowed that there will be no leniency for anyone involved in the deadly explosion at the Mobil Gas Station on Regent Street, Georgetown, which claimed the life of six-year-old Soraya Bourne and left the nation in mourning.
Speaking with reporters on the sidelines of the 13th Parliament session at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Dr. Jagdeo made it clear that the government will pursue justice at every level and will not tolerate acts of terrorism or threats to Guyana’s sovereignty. He stressed that anyone, whether local or foreign, found to be involved in the attack will face the full force of the law.
“If anyone, a foreigner or a local, were to conduct acts of terrorism in Guyana or undermine the sovereignty of our country, they will face the full force of the law,” he declared.
The Vice President commended the swift response from emergency services, noting that the tragedy could have been far worse if not for their quick action. He said the government fully supports the ongoing investigation being led by the Guyana Police Force, which has already resulted in several arrests, including that of the prime suspect, Daniel Alexander Ramirez Peodomo, believed to be a Venezuelan national.
Jagdeo emphasised that the probe extends beyond the immediate suspects, as investigators are following leads that may reveal wider connections. “The investigation did not stop at catching them or putting them before the courts. It will go deeply after linkages, whether local or international,” he said.
So far, ten suspects have been detained, and the High Court has granted police additional time to hold and question them while legal guidance is being sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The Vice President underscored that justice will be served regardless of nationality. “It does not matter what nationality they are. It is the crime that matters,” he stated.
As the investigation broadens, authorities are also collaborating with international partners to trace any cross-border links. Government officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that every person responsible for the gas station attack—whether at home or abroad—is held accountable, as the nation continues to demand justice for the innocent life lost.
