A 62-year-old man of Richmond Village, Essequibo Coast, was killed after the old wooden house he lived in collapsed on him.
The deceased has been identified as Fazal Mohamid, a father of two who had been living alone for several years following the death of his wife. He resided in a small, deteriorating structure located on his brother’s land.
According to his brother, Camo Mohamid, he received a call informing him of the incident and immediately went to the Lima Hospital, where doctors confirmed that Fazal had died.
Another brother, Zaheer Mohamid, described Fazal as a kind and willing individual who was always ready to help others. He said the family had considered applying for housing assistance, but because Fazal was living on family land, he lacked the necessary documents to qualify.
Neighbours reported that Fazal had tied his hammock and was raking under the house when the structure suddenly gave way. They said they had often urged him to seek help to repair the old building, but he had declined.
Community members described him as a humble and helpful man whose sudden death has left residents of Richmond in shock and mourning.
