Four-Lane expansion brings relief to East Bank commuters

The daily gridlock that plagued motorists along the Diamond–Grove stretch of the East Bank Demerara is finally easing, thanks to the ongoing road expansion project that has transformed the corridor into a four-lane thoroughfare.

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill confirmed that the long-standing bottleneck in the Grove area has been resolved, describing the change as a major win for thousands of commuters who rely on the corridor each day.

“I’m sure the Guyanese people are happy that the road at the Grove to Diamond area, we’ve already moved it to asphaltic concrete and the traffic is moving in four lanes – two lanes north and two lanes south – so that bottleneck at Grove has been resolved,” Edghill said.

The Diamond–Grove upgrade forms part of the broader East Bank Demerara expansion, a project aimed at alleviating congestion along one of the country’s busiest arteries. The roadway accommodates over 30,000 vehicles daily, linking residential hubs and industrial zones to the capital city.

Edghill noted that work continues along other sections of the corridor, with the ministry collaborating closely with contractors and the Guyana Police Force to maintain order and ensure safety as the project advances.

“We are working with the contractors at the East Coast to see swifter and smoother movement, and the police will be there this week,” he added.

Earlier this year, new traffic management measures were introduced, including temporary bypasses for private vehicles to reduce disruption during construction. The minister said these proactive steps helped minimize delays and allowed crews to maintain steady progress on the upgrades.

Managed by the Special Projects Unit, the initiative involves complete reconstruction of the roadway, replacement of sub-base materials, and the application of asphaltic concrete for greater durability.

Once completed, the enhanced corridor is expected to boost mobility for residents and businesses, strengthen trade access, and support the government’s broader infrastructure modernization drive.
