Final works on West Bank approach road to the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge to be completed in two weeks

Construction on the northern section of the four-lane approach road to the newly commissioned Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge at Meer Zorgen, West Bank Demerara, is now in full swing, with the Ministry of Public Works announcing that the project will be completed within the next two weeks.

The Ministry said this phase follows the official opening of the bridge on Sunday and the subsequent closure of the aging Demerara Harbour Bridge. With the new bridge fully operational, contractors now have full access to complete the final segment of the approach road, which is a critical link for smoother traffic flow between the East and West Banks of Demerara.

“The works involve completing two additional lanes on the northern side of the approach road, which will facilitate more efficient traffic movement to and from the new bridge,” the Ministry said.

Starting Tuesday, contractors are expected to work around the clock to meet the two-week target. The Ministry emphasized that safety remains a top priority, urging motorists and nearby residents to proceed with caution and adhere to all posted advisories and signage.

Officials noted that this final leg of work marks an important milestone in the Government’s broader infrastructure development agenda, aimed at reducing travel time, enhancing connectivity, and boosting economic activity across the Demerara region.

“The Ministry of Public Works thanks the public for its patience and cooperation as we move swiftly to finalize this important national project — a key step in improving connectivity, reducing travel time, and supporting economic growth across the Demerara region,” the statement concluded.

Once completed, the four-lane approach road is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and complement the modern infrastructure of the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge, a landmark development in Guyana’s transport network.
