The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has reported nearly one thousand traffic infractions between September 28 and October 4, 2025, as part of its intensified efforts to curb road accidents and enhance compliance with national traffic laws.
According to figures released by the Traffic Department, a total of 987 traffic offences were recorded nationwide during the seven-day period.
Among these, speeding remained the most prevalent offence, accounting for 178 cases, followed by failure to wear safety helmets (210) and tinted vehicle violations (190).
The report also highlighted 90 seatbelt offences, 30 cases of driving under the influence, and 78 instances where pillion riders were found without helmets.
Additionally, the police cited motorists for unlighted vehicles (99), faulty parking (4), and breaches of prescribed fitness conditions (108).
In total, 2,392 cases were made across the country for the reporting period, reflecting the Force’s continued focus on enforcement, education, and accountability on Guyana’s roadways.
Alongside law enforcement activities, the Traffic Education Unit ramped up its road safety awareness efforts, hosting lectures and interactive sessions with drivers, riders, and pedestrians at more than 50 community and institutional locations.
These included key areas such as Georgetown, Diamond, Bartica, Mahdia, Lethem, and Port Kaituma, as well as major public roadways like the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, Zeelugt, Mocha, and Craig.
The outreach programme also extended to workplaces and government agencies, with sessions conducted at Trans Guyana Airways, Air Services Limited, Guyana Manganese Inc., Guyana Water Inc., and several ministries, including the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Public Works.
In its continued effort to reach younger audiences, the Department also visited 10 schools across six administrative regions, including Beterverwagting Secondary, Canadian School of Arts & Science, Mahdia Nursery, and Berbice Educational Institute.
These engagements focused on teaching safe crossing techniques, promoting the use of helmets and seatbelts, and encouraging responsible road behaviour.
The GPF reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a visible road presence and expanding its education initiatives under the Social Crime Prevention and Road Safety Strategy.
The Force urged all motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant and to obey traffic regulations designed to protect the lives of all road users.
