Vendors at the Skeldon Market and other markets across Region Six will no longer be required to pay landing fees, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon. Priya Manickchand, announced on Friday.
The confirmation came during the Minister’s visit to the Corriverton Market, where she met directly with vendors who raised concerns that the fees—previously charged for every item brought into the market—were driving up costs and affecting their businesses.
Minister Manickchand reassured stakeholders that the government remains committed to easing financial pressures on small business operators.
“We’re not going to be collecting landing fees anymore. Guys, let’s deal with one issue at a time, right? So, we just solved a big one for you, which means you could keep $40,000 to $50,000 in your pocket every month.
Depending on the quantity of goods you were selling, that allows you more disposable income,” she said.
The announcement was met with relief by vendors, who said the decision would bring much-needed financial relief.
Simone Khan noted, “I’m happy that the minister came and listened to our concerns and they’re trying to put systems in place to have it resolved. I’m happy that the landing fees have been resolved too, because it’s hard on vendors.”
Another vendor, Sabrina Ramdihal, shared, “I feel good, it’s going to help a lot of people in the market.”
Similarly, Sunita Persaud described the move as “an expense cut.”
The removal of landing fees is expected to significantly reduce vendors’ monthly expenses and improve their ability to grow their businesses in Region Six and beyond.
