The Guyana Police Force (GPF) Traffic Department confirmed on October 2, 2025, that it is launching a stricter enforcement campaign to hold minibus operators accountable to the official fare structure implemented by the Ministry of Business over seven years ago.

The advisory, signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Traffic Officer Mahendra Singh, emphasized that the published rates, which became effective since September 1, 2018, remain the legally mandated charges.

This current push is a direct response to persistent overcharging, particularly along high-volume routes such as Georgetown to Parika (Route 32) and Georgetown to Timehri (Route 42).

The GPF is reasserting that the legal framework under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, requires all operators to adhere to these long-standing costs.

Warning and Enforcement Measures
In a direct warning to operators, the Traffic Advisory stated “Operators are reminded that, in accordance with the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02, fares must not be unreasonable and that copies of the approved fare-table must be carried and displayed in the vehicle for inspection at all times.”
It further affirmed that fares must be reasonable and that “Necessary actions will be taken against non-compliant minibus operators.”
To ensure compliance and protect commuters from abuse or exploitation, the advisory confirmed that mandatory stops will be maintained in keeping with the Traffic Department’s Community Relations thrust.

Key Fares Reconfirmed
The official Ministry of Business documents detail the established charges for both adults and children.
The “New Fare Structure Effective September 1, 2018,” includes Zone 42 (Georgetown to Timehri): The legal adult fare for the full route to Timehri (CBI) Int. Airport is $260, while a short drop to Providence is $100.
Zone 31 (Georgetown to Wales): The adult fare for the full distance to Last Bridge Parfait Harmony is $220.
For short drops within the City routes (Zones 40, 41, 45, 46), the adult fare to Kitty/Campbellville is $100, and to South/North Ruimveldt is $120.
Public Role in Compliance

To ensure compliance and protect commuters from abuse or exploitation, the advisory urged the public to aid the enforcement effort.
“Passengers are urged to know the official fares for their route and to report any incidents of overcharging,” the advisory stated.
The Traffic Department emphasized that the public can report incidents to the nearest police station, via the 911 emergency system, or directly to the WhatsApp hotline at Traffic Headquarters: (592) 620-6713.
This campaign signals a renewed focus by the authorities to instill discipline in the public transportation sector.
