President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has been named to TIME Magazine’s 2025 TIME100 Next list, earning recognition as one of 100 rising leaders shaping the future across politics, business, science, and activism.
The TIME100 Next list, an expansion of TIME’s iconic “Most Influential People” series, highlights individuals poised to define the coming decades. Ali’s profile will appear in the October 13 issue of TIME, which will be available online and on newsstands from October 3.
Since assuming office in August 2020 at age 40, and following his re-election in September 2025, Ali has overseen Guyana’s emergence as the world’s fastest-growing economy, driven largely by offshore oil discoveries. During his tenure, he has advanced policies on food security, climate change, energy transition, and global cooperation, positioning Guyana as both an oil producer and a leader among small states.
TIME’s recognition highlights Ali’s growing international profile. In recent years, he has used global platforms, including the United Nations General Assembly and climate summits, to advocate for equity in climate finance, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development for the Global South.
At home, the accolade is expected to reinforce Ali’s narrative of building a modern Guyana with an influential global voice. Analysts note the recognition may particularly resonate with young Guyanese, who see their country gaining unprecedented international visibility.
Internationally, Ali’s inclusion places him among a new generation of leaders to watch. Observers suggest it could open further diplomatic and investment opportunities for Guyana, even as the government faces pressure to manage oil revenues responsibly and ensure economic benefits reach all citizens.
Ali now joins the ranks of world figures spotlighted by TIME as emerging visionaries, cementing his status as both a regional and international statesman.
