Repairs to the Paruima Airstrip in Upper Mazaruni, Region Seven, are expected to be completed within the next two months, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill has announced.
The $400 million airstrip, which replaced the former grass landing area, was upgraded to a durable all-weather concrete surface to improve the movement of passengers, goods, and services.
However, shortly after its initial completion, surface defects were identified during the liability period, leading to a temporary closure. Minister Edghill said the contractor, International Import and Supplies, has been instructed to address the defects at its own cost.
“Out of his [the contractor’s] goodwill, he has decided not just to fix the area that had the defects, but he is putting in a new layer of stone,” the minister said during a recent engagement.
Once reopened, the upgraded airstrip is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and spur development for the Amerindian village of Paruima. Residents previously faced difficulties landing aircraft during adverse weather conditions, a problem the new airstrip is designed to eliminate.
Minister Edghill also noted that similar upgrades are underway at other airstrips in Region Seven, including Eteringbang, Karisparu, and Ekereku Bottom, to strengthen hinterland transport and accessibility. (Department of Public Information)
