New Demerara River Bridge crowned with Cacique design

The first tower of the New Demerara River Bridge (P-34 South) was on Monday morning crowned with a design featuring a replica of the Cacique Crown, Guyana’s third-highest national award.

The symbolic gesture highlights the bridge as a landmark of national pride and engineering achievement.

As the New Demerara River Bridge prepares for its official opening, engineers last week carried out a major load testing exercise to ensure its safety and durability.
Twenty fully loaded trucks were strategically positioned across the bridge to simulate heavy traffic, while advanced sensors measured stress, strain, deflection, tower movement, and cable forces.

The successful exercise confirmed that the bridge meets the highest standards of strength and reliability, paving the way for its long-awaited commissioning.

Ministers of Public Works, Juan Edghill and Annette Ramraj, along with other officials, were on site to witness the operation.

Once fully operational, the new cable-stayed bridge will provide a safe and reliable crossing over the Demerara River, serving Guyana for decades to come while standing as a symbol of the country’s engineering and cultural heritage.
