The 1 Infantry Battalion claimed top spot in the Guyana Defence Force’s third quarterly fitness competition on Friday, edging out teams from across the Force in a two-day test of strength and endurance.
The battalion’s male team finished first, ahead of the Ensigns of Standard Officer Course 56 in second place and the 3.1 Special Forces Squadron in third, a release said. In the female category, the Guyana National Reserve took first place, with the Coast Guard and Base Camp Stephenson placing second and third respectively.
Colonel General Staff Kenlloyd Roberts, MSM, said the competition was more than a contest, calling it a practical demonstration of infantry skills vital to operational readiness. He urged greater participation and told unit Sergeant Majors to focus on lifting average performances.
The event, the third of four scheduled for 2025, highlighted the GDF’s focus on fitness, discipline and professional development. The final competition later this year is expected to be closely fought, with possible participation from regional partners.
