Empowering citizens, not fostering dependency, was a central theme at a Meet & Greet Reception with the Guyanese diaspora on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Addressing a packed audience, President Dr. Irfaan Ali emphasised that government programmes are “never geared towards creating dependency, but to empower people, to give them the tools and opportunities to stand on their own.” He noted that empowerment is being embedded across every sector, including education, housing, healthcare, training, and youth development.
“Our objective is to make sure that every Guyanese, whether here or abroad, feels the pride of knowing they can contribute meaningfully to building a stronger Guyana,” Dr. Ali said.
The President underscored the government’s investments in skills development, innovation, and entrepreneurship as key strategies to create lasting opportunities. He explained that these initiatives are not only about immediate relief but also about ensuring citizens have the capacity to succeed independently and sustainably.
Dr. Ali further highlighted Guyana’s growing international recognition for its rapid transformation, urging diaspora members to act as ambassadors by sharing the country’s progress and exploring opportunities to contribute through business, mentorship, and investment.
He also revealed that the Diaspora Unit will be modernised to strengthen connections and create more streamlined opportunities for overseas Guyanese to support national development.
While acknowledging challenges—particularly in ensuring equitable access and long-term sustainability—the President reiterated that empowerment remains the guiding principle of his administration. He called on the diaspora to embrace this vision, stressing that Guyana’s future rests not on dependency but on the collective strength and contributions of all its people.
